I started thinking about how our society and our media represents girls who don't fit into that perfect virginal box. We have seen the affects of Miley Cyrus's performance at the VMAs. It doesn't matter if other performers had acted the same way she did, she is no longer that little girl we knew and loved on Hanna Montana. I know people are probably sick and tired of hearing about Miley Cyrus but she was the first person who came to mind, and I think she makes a really good point. I think the other interesting thing about her is that she took a vow of abstinence, and now that she no longer is in that box and is showing her sexuality on stage (something that is done ALL THE TIME in music videos, by men and women) she is disgusting and a slut.
My friend believes that her husband should make the money and she should stay home and raise the kids. Right now she is homeschooling her three year old daughter while also taking care of her eight-month old son. I don't know how she does it. She says that the man is the head of the household and makes the final decision as well; she is allowed to put in her opinion but he doesn't have to listen to it. That would drive me insane. This reminds me of the happy housewives, how they please their husband and raise their children but don't complain. This also fits into that box.
This post really intrigues me. The idea that when women show that they have type of sexuality inside them, according to society that is gross and slut-like. But when a man has sex or anything along those lines that means that he is just being a man and we applaud him for that. This idea is called slut-shaming and it's an idea that has brought me to really think about what sexuality means and the ways that we display it. The hypocrisy behind slut-shaming, and the whole "present" thing just enforces young women to think that there is something wrong with their sexuality. WHICH IS SO MESSED UP, because it's just making these young women even more sad and depressed then they already are because of the constant media that is fed to them at such a young age.
ReplyDeleteI have sadly seen this happen to so many vibrant young women. They have gone from being-even if a virgin- happy go lucky liberal open-minded women to close minded close mouthed clones once they fine their "man of their dreams". I think that it is a sad state of affairs because as the man fell in love with the bright happy opinionated woman - even if he is the reason she has dulled into this psyudo-self to please him and her religious views, she will ultimately not make him or herself happy and in the long run will end up miserable if she isn't secretly already.
ReplyDeleteI am interested to find out how she really feels about staying home and having no real opinion on where the money ends up and such- we tried that- my husband and I for 8 years and as we are divorcing now, you can see one- it ended badly, and two I have no real marketable skills to fall back on for myself and y children. Its a lovely fantasy to think "happily ever after 1950's Stepford wife but in the real world whats she going to do?
